Hi I would like to know which one of these two would be better in these certain questions.
1. How long these cards will last. I'm asking because of that 3.5gb of vram issue with 970 while the r9 290x has a true 4gb. My question is which one of these two would last longer in the end preferably 1080p and maybe 1440p.
2. Now, I know gtx 970 is more powerful than r9 290x but can mantle or vulkan make the r9 290x just as powerful?
3. Overclocking potential of these two cards.
4. Who has better drivers?

Anyways besides these can you give me other reasons as to which one of these better than the other.

Solution
The cards will both keep you gaming for years with good graphics
in games that used mantle the 290x tended to beat the 970. (read: in the future w/ dx12 new games will probably be better on the 290x)
the 970 is a better overclocker
For single GPU setups, the drivers from both companies are solid. In spite of what the trolls like to say about AMD, it's drivers are in no way bad.

1) Will last maybe for 2 years Ultra Settings 1080p
3) Some GTX cards like EVGA got better cooling system so u can have better overclocking potential
4) Nvidia got 2015 drivers. AMD... i dont know maybe 2009... I dont even know if they have someone to hork on driver software anymore xD

+Nvidia got new bios and if u dont use 50% of GPU fans doesnt work. So its quieter as hell.

The 290x is the stronger card and especially at higher resolution due to real 4gb of memory. Also, it is cheaper right now so there is no questions.

For drivers, honestly, people can say whatever they want, but the fact is that there is no significant difference. Day one release is why people complain, however both camp fail to deliver. For example, Nvidia crash in the Witcher 3 while AMD don't, however AMD has some issue with CF in the game due to a beta release while Nvidia don't.

You can grab a 290x PCS+ for 310$ while the closest 970 GTX is around 340$.

The big thing that piss me off is the Gamework scam, however the Fury X is going to be the top card for at least a year if not 18 months which will put a brake to that nonsense.

I have to disagree with the statement that the 970 is more powerful than the 290X. Sure I have seen plenty of videos that show that, and in every case they have overclocked the GPUs. So it's only safe to say the 970 is a better over clocker. In other videos where they compare standard clock speed GPUs there is almost no difference, some games favour the 970 while others the 290X.
I have used both AMD and NVidia over the years and to be honest have never had driver issues with either. Personally I would look at the 290X if you are planning on doing 4k gaming as this is were you need as much vram as you can get.
