Low fps in games after playing for 4-5 minutes? Help!!

I am getting huge fps drops after 4-5 minutes of gaming.? While playing ryse son of rome, fps goes from 30-40 range to 5-10 range..after the lag started I closed the game and checked the cpu temperature, it was 77C.. is it due to cpu overheating or the gpu? I bought my gpu a week ago so I am really confused what is causing this issue..plz help!!!
My specs
Core 2 duo e6750
4gb ram 1066mhz
Windows 8 64 bit
500 watt psu (unknown company)
Msi gtx 750 ti 2gb gddr5

Are you sure this will fix the issue? Few days before buying my gpu I found my heatsink hanging due to the bracket being broken..I reattached this without applying new thermal paste.is this the reason why I am getting low fps ?
