So... is anyone else asking this question? Normally I wouldn't fret about it and just get the better one (assuming the 390x), but they're priced $100 apart from each other, clocked the same, with the same memory frequency, vram, etc. So what's the difference? Any benchmarks or tests you guys can refer me to?

Solution
Well the difference is the number of shaders. The 390 has 2560 shaders and the 390x has 2816. However the Fury X is meant to have 4096 shaders running at 1Ghz so maybe it is worth waiting 3 days to see what it can do before buying a card.

The 390x is clocked slightly higher. I was wondering how much better it actually was also, and the benchmarks I could find show that the 390x gets an average 3-5FPS advantage over the 390. If 3-5FPS justifies 100 dollars for you. Get the 390x, otherwise. It is a waste of money.

He was asking what the difference the 390x is compared to the 390. Tomshardware does not even mention anything about the 390 in their testing or benchmarks. Only the 390x was tested.

thanks for clearing it up a bit, it seems that there is hardly any differences between the two. Still torn between the 390 and 390x. I need something that'll last me a while, and I need something that'll run 1080p. I'm probably just gonna go MSI's 390x because that has a better framerate than the 390x, which already has a better framerate than the 390. Thanks for helping out guys.

Honestly if you are only playing games in 1080p. I would recommend something more like an Nvidia 970. The 970 actually beats the 390x in a lot of titles in 1080p. Unless you plan on playing games at 1440p or 4K 2160p. I would say 970 is gonna do better at 1080p gaming especially with DX12 coming very soon. On top of that you get to take advantage of all the things Nvidia cards do like Physx etc.

Or if you can wait, I recommend waiting on both the FuryX and the Fury, it might impact more price drops on current cards out or you might like what the Fury offers more. Just a thought, good luck.

Im going with the r9 390 after being with a gtx 970 for a while because of it having more memory. I cant justify spending the extra 100 dollars just for a couple of minor changes. I'm buying one now and after a few months of driver updates buying another for crossfire.

I mean yeah the 390/x is better, but it's mostly just on par with a 980. That's not a good upgrade in the least bit, you won't see any MAJOR performance upgrade over your current card

I know its not a great upgrade, and maybe i am moving back a bit, but the reviews for the r9 390 are pretty positive and the extra vram is a big plus. I Just cant afford a 980ti and i dont want another 970. Thus the r9 390 is best bang for my buck. Watch this video by JayztwoCents

Would you say the R9 390 would be fine for Fallout 4 and upcoming games this year? About to buy one and it seems better than the 970.

I have the 390 too, plays fallout 4 very nice all at max settings. However don't buy the gigabyte g1 gaming ones, I have one and when fans kick in beyond 65% they're like an airplane taking off.

afaik, the 390 is almost on par with the 980, apart from having twice as much Vram, all of which is accessible (the 970 is actually 3,5 gb, with the last 500mb being slower) Another question, however, is drivers, where Nvidia seems to be out of sight, compared to AMD...

I say its overkill if the guys wanting to save money a 270x will do fine
