Hello,

I am thinking to buy a 390x card since I have an Geforce 9800gt and it obviously needs replacement. In my country the cheapest non-reference gtx 980 is about 70$ more expensive than any 390x and I really can't afford to buy one right now.

Question: Can my PSU provide enough power for the 390X and my entire system without running into blue screens. crashes, restarts, 'explosions' :) etc.?

The card I want to purchase:
MSI R9 390X GAMING 8G Radeon R9 390X 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127872&cm_re=msi_390x-_-14-127-872-_-Product

My system specifications:

PSU: Thermaltake Smart SE 630W

Motherboard: Asus Z97 Pro Gamer
CPU: Intel i7 4790k (not overclocked)
RAM: 2 x 8GB Kingston HyperX 2400Mhz
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
HDD: 2 x 500gb Samsung 7200 rpm
COOLING: Noctua NH-U14S for cpu, 3 x 120mm fans and 2 x 140mm fans for the case

Thank you.

Yea, that's what I was thinking as well. I payed 85$ on this psu and based on the reviews and specifications it seemed to be a great choice . I can't RMA it and I don't think I can afford to buy another psu atm. I might as well buy a cheap gtx 980, Gainward gtx 980 3-fan version in this case since in my country it is only about 50$ more than msi 390x, being the cheapest 980 I could find.

Thank you all for your answers!

According to everything I've read on the 3xx series amd gpus for gen1, they are nothing more than rebranded 2xx series with added GDDR5 ram and upgraded clocks. It won't be till gen2 series is out that the 3xx will take advantage of the new memory type, which will be a rather large boost in performance. That said, the 980 is probably the better card over gen1 390x anyways.

It is true. They are a rebrand, power hungry and weak performers in tessellation applications in comparison to maxwell gen 2. But they compete directly with gtx 980 at frames in many games, especially at higher resolutions, due to their large vram and higher bandwidth. Also the cooling solutions for 390x as I can see can handle the tdp with ease. The 980s are simply too expensive. The msi twin frozr gtx 980 costs 250$ more than its 390x counterpart and still they perform roughly the same, the 390x even coming on top at times.

So I think that, unless money are not an issue and one has too small of a power supply to feed the amd card, the 390x is the right choice. Since I cannot afford a good 980 (the cheap 980s seem to be noisy and run very hot if overclocked) I think I am going to get the MSI 390X and see if it can work with my psu. If it can't I'll just cry, rma it and try to find a solution :).

Thank you for your advice!

True, the amd cards are better at higher resolutions, have been for a while. Wonder, since the 980 is so expensive, and isn't that much more in performance over a 970, if a 970 wouldn't be a better option for a year or so, then get the 390x when gen2 comes out or even get a new nvidia since they'll also have the new memory tech available to them
