Driver updates for AMD Catalyst?

I tried installing the required AMD-catalyst driver for my system(Compaq Precario CQ61) through safe mode(because my windows 8.1 recently went all black after displaying windows logo, didn't see anything else) and it gives an error message "failed to load detection driver". Please how can I get past this error message or better still boot to normal windows so I can update the driver.
