Forgive me for my newbie question, but im currently using a ZOTAC GTX590, since 4 years ago. Although it still runs most games pretty well, its starting to get outdated to new games, such as The Witcher 3, etc.

Should i buy a new gtx590 for SLI or should i buy a 900 series gfx (960-970), 980 is kind of too expensive for now.

My specs:
Mainboard - Rampage IV Formula (bios 4901)
Processor - Intel Core i7 3930k (overclocked with ez rampage utility)
Memory - 8gb RAM Corsair DDR3

Thanks, any more suggestions and informations are welcome.

I would just buy a GTX 970, which will give you solid performance for many years to come.

The GTX 590 is such an old card, there's really no point in buying another one for SLI in my opinion, as you'll have a much better experience if you just buy a new Maxwell GPU.

The rest of you system is still in great shape, all you really need is a new GPU and you'll be set for a long time.

In short, I'd say no. That'd ultimately be quad-SLI which would scale pretty poorly in a plethora of games. You'd definitely have a lot of raw horsepower, and that might even push more frames at 1920x1080 than a single 980. The issues lie in the following in regards to your plan

■ Not enough VRAM to justify a quad SLI solution given today's resolution/game scheme
■ Will run very hot, unless you planned for a water block. But why would you?
■ It's going to require a around 1000W continuous power supply from a trusted brand
■ Will not support many features that a new architecture will
■ You'll experience some nasty micro-stuttering in many games

Making a GTX 590 SLI is just not worth it, and there wouldn't be a notorious upgrade. I highly recommend the GTX 960 gaming edition, and if you can save up a little more, get the GTX 970 which is like 50% better. Though if you can't afford the GTX 970 don't feel bad, GTX 960 is really good, high end, and more than enough for most of the games. Good luck.

Also, watch out for your PSU. We dont want your gaming pc to become a barbecue.

As the others have said, dual GTX590s are going to be a bit of a pain, quad SLI doesn't scale too well in many games and the relative lack of VRAM per core is going to hurt the settings you can apply, regardless of how much rendering power they possess.
If you're on a single 1080 monitor a GTX970 is the way to go, if you're on a higher rez and don't mind a switch, the R9 290/290X has dropped in price and does as well/slightly better than the GTX970 at 1440 or on dual 1080 screens. If you don't want to switch the GTX970 is still a brilliant performer at higher resolutions and has the extra benefits lower power consumption and usually cooler, quieter operation.

The upgrades alone, in things like directX, physX, ram type and necessary size alone pretty much negate any advantages the natural sli from a 590 have to offer. The 590 may have more horsepower available, but from a software standpoint, its all balls and no brains.

According to nvidia press, the gtx970 is meant to be the upgrade for high end 500/600 cards, the 980 for high end 700 cards. So according to nvidia, the 970 would be an actual upgrade for a 590, more so than a lateral move.
