Alright guys, heres the scoop:
I have win7 64bit pc, everything is pretty old and im poor so i got a second HDD from a friend for free. My current HDD is 200GB ( i know :c ) and he gave me another one he wasnt using for a long time and its also 200GB. Theyre both Western digital. Now the question is : how do i add it to my pc and when i do, will i need to reinstall my OS? Also, what if the second HDD is broken, would i be able to know instantly? Thanks for any help guys.

Like said before if it's an SATA HDD you just need to connect the SATA cable (to red ports on your motherboard) and connect the power cable to the HDD (the other end goes to PSU). Hopefully you have some spare power cable that isn't being used.

You don't need to re-install the OS, even if the other disk has OS on it (like the laptop I'm using right now).
If the HDD is broken you just won't see it. Possibly if it's not showing up in OS you could check the BIOS to see if it shows up in there (and then enable it or whatnot). If not, the chances of it working at all are rather slim.

If it is working you could download CrystalDiskInfo to see if it is in good condition or not. And afterwards you could format it if you wish.

As for the pins...

open the pc and tell us your motherboard make/model. I'm assuming it is sata interface. No you don't need to reinstall the OS as your computer is still working. It will see the new drive as another letter d e f g h or something. C is the drive that is the boot drive. If the drive is caput- you won't see it under my computer at all nor will the OS detect it or bios for that matter.

To install the HDD, just mount the HDD to a rack, and connect the drive to the sata III port of the mother board (there should written where it is on the mother board). You shouldn't have to reinstall your is, just format the HDD. (sorry for my bad English).
Even if the HDD is not working, your pc should work just fine.

Hey man, i did get a SATA cable and mounted my second HDD in my pc. It booted and everything works just as before, but even though in BIOS it showed 2 HDDs and when i logged on to the computer it said "sucessfully detected new HDD" or something along those lines, i do not see any new disk partitions, nor the space increased in either of the partitions.
Help pls ;_;
