I'm using MSI afterburner to overclock my GTX 880M. But I can't increase the fan speed. The fan speed slider is greyed out, as well as the "auto" and "user define" buttons, and there is nothing pertaining to fan speed in the settings.

But I know it''s possible to adjust the fan speed on this GPU, because the ASUS GPUtweak program that came with my laptop lets me turn the fan to max speed. Unfortunately, max speed is insanely high. It sounds like a jet engine and probably isn't good for the fans lifespan. There's no way to set an intermediate fan speed with GPUtweak, and you can't overclock above 5%, either.

If I can't increase the fan speed, do I risk damaging my GPU?

Well yes, if your fans run at say 25% all the time while...

Usually graphics cards have a defined fan curve by default so it runs faster or slower at different temperatures. If you run a load test like Valley, can you hear the fan speed increase? If it does, then there's probably no reason to set a manual fan speed/curve.

The only thing that will really "damage" the GPU is if you run it too hot for too long. As long as you never really go above the max recommended temperatures, you should be fine. As for what the max temps are for that card, I have no idea. lol

Well yes, if your fans run at say 25% all the time while overclocked you will damage it, because it's not being cooled properly. The reason why the fan setting is grayed out is most likely the manufactorers didn't want you to tinker with your laptop or the GPU doesn't have feedback build into the fan.Usually you don't want to overclock any of your laptop components ,because they WEREN'T ment to be overclocked. You will do more harm than good if you overclock your laptop. But if you don't give a damn about my word or your laptop you can overclock so.
