Hey guys, I built my PC back in 2009 so I need an upgrade. I'm currently running a
Cool Master full tower case
Phenom x4 3.0 ghz processor
Apevia ATX?CB700W ATX12V Power supply
Gforce Gt220
Motherboard is gigabyte msq-m4a785td-v evo
Ra is:G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin -8 GB total

I want to be able to play Ark Survival Evolved. I want the build to include a GTX 970 unless better options exist in that price range and be AMD based.

Can I reuse anything from my current build? Obviously Hard drive 1TB and disc drive will be reused same with monitor, keyboard etc. What other components should I buy?

Solution
What brand/model is your PSU? What RAM do you have? It's best to list all of your components, even the case.

For a 970, I would get a new CPU/Mobo with 2x4 GB RAM at 1600 MHz and a tier one PSU (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html)...

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($164.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($26.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($99.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card ($339.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $624.96...

There's a decent deal on that CPU/mobo combo right now that makes it as cheap as a 970 board, and you could add a second GPU in the future if you wanted to. Another good consideration would be a SSD. You can of course reuse anything your comfortable with having in the new build, but for the 970 I'd at least do a new CPU/mobo.

It's really too early in the game to tell what Ark will need to run well, but it doesn't look very graphically intensive. I'd say the CPU/mobo is a basic, modern AMD build that will be fine for most games, and the 970 should be fine for Ark at 1080p. One option would be to wait until the game is farther along in development. Then you'll have a better idea.

Cheers

I updated the PSU,RAM and case in the OP

I'm going with this combo on NewEgg $272

AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo)

ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 6 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

+
Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 MKNSSDEC120GB 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State
53$
+
MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card
350$
For a total of 675$

Any suggestions/Changes? Do I need more then a 750w power supply?

I would invest in a new PSU if you're going to spend all this money on upgrades. Apevia is a cheap brand, and if it goes it can take other components with it. As for wattage, 650 W would be appropriate for one GPU while I'd use 850 W for two GPUs.

That CPU/Mobo/RAM combo is fine for what you want to do with the rig. I'm not really familiar with Mushkin; they aren't as highly rated as Samsung so I would get an 850 Evo SSD. Just my opinion though. That MSI card is good.

Cheers

I'm very keen to here how this turned out. I am getting hugely mixed responses from all the forums I am reading, about how effective any type of "upgrade" is currently, given the major lack of optimization the game is currently suffering from.

I am running an AMD 955BE quad at 3.5ghz, HX650 Corsair PSU, R9 285 GPU, 8gb Corsair DDr3 1600, Samsung SSD, all water cooled, and I get atrocious frame rates, and bad FPS drop outs, yet my rig smashes any other game I throw at it, despite being quite old tech now. I don't see the CPU or GPU being utilised anywhere near max, so I am wondering if an upgrade is premature.

I know you're just trying to collect some data on this, but my $0.02 is to wait until full release. The game could run well, run like crap, or be mothballed into a corner somewhere, and this stability concern is assuming you still want to play the game (i.e. it doesn't change drastically during development in a way you don't like) at full release. Regardless, you'll have some official reviews/benches/specs to make an informed decision on what, if anything, you should upgrade.

go with gigabyte gtx 970 g1 ,highest baseclock/boost clock in gtx970, triple fans allows better cooling for better overclocking, the best gtx970!!!! plus it looks so cool!!!
