The time has come once again to reformat my laptop, however the windows 7 key on the bottom is no longer legible and due to some old recovery and install factors the drive no longer has the original recovery boot ( I can not use f# keys to quick reformat - I need to use the cd)

Is there a way to recover the key?

EDIT: I have contacted microsoft, who told me to contact the maker (HP) who told me all they can do is sell me the OEM disks.

Still hoping theres another way

On the label; in the corners there should be two other shorter numbers. One is the MS End Number and the other is a stock ID. I can not remember which is which.

For example;

X12-51622 (one would look like this)
(the other one varies, it may be a long string of letters and numbers with a - or it may be a solid block.) have a look at google images for examples if you need to.

Contact Microsoft, provide them this string of characters and see if they will invalidate the old key and provide you a brand new one. I have done this in the past. I think it's the MS end number they need. If your not sure which of the two it is, give them both.

If you can not see this part of the label either then OEM disks is all you can do.

Thank you I will try that - I can no longer get the OEM disks however as my laptop is EoL

This would be a great tool... if the laptop didn't currently have linux installed. But thank you I will keep this app bookmarked for future use.
