Windows 8.1 Randomly Freezing

Hi All,

My specs http://daiktus.com/item/show/739074-hp-envy-h8-1485ea-desktop-pc

Only difference is that I have fitted a AMD Radeon R9 290 Graphics Card and 128GB SSD.

This problem started around a week ago, I was watching a video on VLC Meida Player, The video played all he way through but when i pressed Esc to exit full screen mode the pc froze but the sound carried on.

Since then it will now randomly freeze when I am browsing the internet or installing new programs.

I have done a complete new install of Windows 8.1 64bit and have checked my drivers are up to date but I am still having the issue.

Please help.

Disable your page file settings temporarily and if the freezing isn't as frequent, it is your page file settings that needs some tweaking

Determine page file size preferably 1.5x your ram size:http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/11840-optimum-page-file-size.html

Has everything listed, as i said I have changed the graphics card and installed an SSD

Take it back to the shop and get them to look at it.

I have had it for over 2 years and it is out of warranty, I do not want to pay a hefty repair price if it is something I can do myself

Yep, first try setting it to 24GB or close to that and reboot. If it doesn't work try again with the settings beng disabled

If one of these settings reduce or remove the freezing, it is most likely a page file problem

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that you replaced the GT 640 by an R9 290. Did you also replace the 460W PSU?

Apologies it is the R9 270, No I did not change the PSU but it worked fine for 4 months then last Saturday it started doing this

I have read elsewhere about disabaling the store apps automatic update is that a good idea? and alson about running DISM, should I try these?

What store apps? As far as I'm concerned the issue is with the PSU or the GPU.

Only the standard ones that are already on it, The computer has been fine for ages then all of a sudden started doing this, I have done a complete new install of windows on the SSD could that be the issue?

Not if you applied all updates. The likelihood of a defective GPU is very high; can you reproduce the issue WITH Furmark Burn-in test?

how long does it take to run? or does it carry on while the pc is on?

Just let it run for an hour or until the system locks up.
