I currently have a Samsung 840 Pro and my new x99 MoBo supports M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 so I was thinking of upgrading to the Samsung M.2 SSD. My question is if this would provide a decent boost in system speed and responsiveness. I know this won't be as big of a jump as a HDD to an SSD but my current drive read speed is 534 MB/s seq and 38 MB/s 4k and the M.2 is 2225 MB/s seq and 43 MB/s 4k. The sequential speeds are about 4 times faster but the 4k speeds are only about 12% higher. The read IOPS are 118,400 and I'm assuming I'll boot in about 4 seconds since the sequential is so fast but from what I understand, everything in the OS is random access so would it be any faster once I'm in the OS? Is this a worthwhile upgrade or should I wait for something better to come along?

Do not do anything until Samsung releases their brand new retail version of the SM951 NVMe ssd with full manufacturers warranty. Samsung started shipping the new drives to partners in preparation for an imminent launch. Then Samsung recalled all of the ssd's that had been shipped. Samsung indicated the recall was for a firmware update. It was reported at several popular review sites and I have confirmation through my own sources.

The only SM951's currently available are OEM versions for installation in computers sold by companies like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, Asus, and a few others. The OEM versions do not come with a full factory warranty. Instead, the warranty is supposed to be honored by the computer companies. There are a few...

If you didn't already have an SSD, I'd be 50/50 on the question. Yes, the SM951 is that much faster, but there is little practical benefit for the added cost...5 second boot instead of 8 seconds maybe? Of course the exception is if you are performing a LOT of read/write associated work day to day (e.g., lots of database work), in which case an SSD might be iffy anyway. Since you already have a pretty good SSD, IMHO it would be a waste to "upgrade" to the SM951.

There are a few select vendors that are selling them to consumers. One of them, Ram City publically stated they would honor the warranty.

Not all OEM versions of the SM951 have the exact same firmware. Samsung has different versions of the firmware for different pc companies. For example the HP version has its own firmware while the Dell version has a slightly different firmware.

Finally the new consumer retail version will be an NVMe drive. The current OEM versions are ACHI drives.
