I just purchased a XFX R9 280x video adapter and have a problem with the power supply cables.

How do I hook up this card to an Antec HE550 PSU? What use are the included y-connectors if you can't use them as described on page 3 of the quick install guide?

main problem, you're below the advised min psu for the card...
Minimum Power Supply Requirement: 750 watt
XFX Recommended Power Supply: XFX 850W PSU

so this could potentially damage the psu, gpu, or whole system...

650watts would be fine they over exaggerate on those requirements they assume your buying a 20 dollar ebay psu, a single 280x wont draw anywhere near 750 watts, maybe 500watts total from the whole system depending on the cpu. But like i said 550watts is cutting it real close with a 280x.

I guess but the min 12v rail amperage for a 280x is 21a and that is nothing my 550watt power supply has 45amps on the 12v rail the OP's antec has about the same but its split up on three 12v rails.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I went with vagrantsoul's solution and bought a new 750W PSU. Probably the best in the long run.

PS. I still don't know what to do with those stupid y-connectors....

Yah that should be just fine. I have heard good things about that power supply
