8GB Dual Channel or 12GB

Hello everyone,

I have Asus Zenbook UX51VZ which has 2x4GB modules where 1 module can't be changed/replaced. Now I am running VMs on it and sometimes I am getting low memory warnings. I am thinking to upgrade one of the module to 8GB but I am skeptical how it would affect the memory performance as it wouldn't be dual channel anymore?

As long as two compatible modules are installed, it will be dual channel.

Extra ram is good. Intel ram controllers are largely insensitive to ram speeds.

No, I meant speed.
Higher speed comes with higher latency, negating some of the benefit of faster speed.
Synthetic ram benchmarks show impressive differences, but real app performance or FPS is hardly impacted at all.
