Hi, I just bought a dual-x r9 280 and after i installed it apparently it all ran smoothly, but after a couple of hours the computer shut down, twice.

Could this be an issue with the hardware? the vid card says it needs a power supply for 500w, I have a corsair vx for 550w, is this enough or do i need to upgrade?

Thanks

Solution
Here is the GPU that I think the OP was talking about (R9 280, but it is a Sapphire Dual X version?):

Edit: Sorry I missed the Corsair VX 550w PSU you mentioned. It is a value PSU and might normally be okay with a 280, but that is really pushing it. I would upgrade to at least a 600w PSU by Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, PCP&C, or XFX to name a few brands.
Well there are several factors, but usually when you have the computer shutdown after installing a new GPU it usually points to the PSU not having enough power to run the system under the conditions it is running under (maybe higher temps in the case due to the new GPU).

Normally I'd say the PSU should be fine, but what are you complete specs of your system, so we can help you out?

You should delete your last response. Way too much information. People are going to get scared away by how verbose it is. Question: do you have a 280 or 280x. Either way, you need to upgrade you power supply most likely. 280/280x recommended minimum system power supply requirement is 550/600 watts respectively. Consider upgrading. Evga g2 850 is nice. If money is tight let us know and we can try to help you pick something. Look at the link I posted below.

Ur PSU is running short of power when ur GPU is on full load.
try atleast going for a 700W
ur CPU is also power hungry

I had exact the same config but had corsair GS 700 so didnt get any issues of power.
