Hi everyone,

I've been having some problems with my HDD lately, and I have yet to figure out what's wrong with it. I've tried a couple of different actions and tests, but so far with no avail. Any input is much appreciated. I've tried to explain the issue in detail in the section below, if something is unclear, please don't hesitate to ask, I might have forgotten something,

--------------------------
For the past few weeks, I've experienced really annoying freezing/lag on programs running on my laptop's WD HDD. The freeze usually lasts under 1 second, with a random frequency. This occurs on every program installed on the HDD, everything from Microsoft Office to high end games.

My laptop is fitted with 2 storage units, an SSD and the HDD. The HDD is usually used for gaming. When gaming, these random freezes can quickly become very annoying. I've noticed that the games usually freeze when a sound starts playing, or a cutscene start. Almost like it freezes when the game has to load up a new file.

When the HDD starts spinning, it usually makes a distinct "click". This doesn't happen all the time, and I haven't been able to correlate the "click"s to the random freezing. I tried to look up HDD failure sounds, but wasn't able match any of the sounds with this click. Before the freezing, I didn't pay attention to the HDD sounds. The sound might have been present while the HDD was still "healthy".

From time to time, it almost sounds like the HDD is spinning up quite often, perhaps once per minute. Is this normal? I've checked my laptop's power settings, it is not set to turn off the HDD after a short period of time.

I have tried to locate the issue through several different hard drive diagnostic programs, but with no avail. Neither HD Tune Pro, CrystalDiskInfo or Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics could pinpoint any damages. When running a benchmark test on HD Tune Pro, I noticed that the access time was a bit high, ~18 ms. Is it possible that the high access time could account for my issues?

I've also tried to defragment the HDD. It has also been reformatted.

------------

Best regards

Solution
Hi again, Ibonhaw!

Indeed, since the WD drive was pre-installed in the laptop, I'm afraid you'd need to contact the OEM manufacturer's tech support for assistance. I wouldn't advise tempering with the hardware yourself but if the laptop is out of warranty, you should consider taking to professional laptop repair services and let the tech guys there handle it. They would be able to test all the components and let you know what is the source of the issue.

Best of luck! I hope everything works out!

Welcome to the community, Ibonhaw!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your issues with the WD HDD in your laptop! :( Good job with the troubleshooting, though! Since none of the diagnostic tools are detecting any issues with the drive, I would suspect a SATA connection failure.
I'd also like to ask you if the drive was pre-installed in the laptop or did you personally upgrade to the WD HDD? I guess, if the laptop is out of warranty, you could try connecting the HDD to a different computer and see how it will react there. This is a good way to determine what exactly is the source of this annoying freeze/lag.
If it's indeed a SATA connector failure, you should contact the laptop manufacturer and ask for assistance on how to replace it.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting though. Hope these tips help! :)

Hi, Supersoph, thanks for the reply.

The drive was preinstalled in the laptop. My laptop is currently 2.5 years old, so I can't remember whether I formatted it or not.
I was hoping that it wouldn't come down to me opening my laptop. I've done some minor work on desktop computers before, and to my understanding, they are way easier to work with. If opening the laptop is the next step, this might need to stay on hold for a while.

I'll probably try to contact the computer manufacturer and take it from there.

Sorry I'm a bit late to answer, I've been quite busy the last couple of days.

Anyways, I would like to thank you for your time and help. Hopefully I'll be able to resolve the issue, if not I can always use an external HDD.
Much appreciated :)
