Hi,

I have an ASRock 990FX Extreme9 board and like all ASRock 990FX boards, the Northbridge and VRM's get quite toasty. In an attempt to repaste the heatsink over the northbridge I noticed it has thermal pads instead of paste like below:

So my question is, am I able to remove these and add thermal paste or would I need to buy better thermal pads?

Many thanks, although not too sure I can get K5-pro in the UK. Have you got anymore suggestions?

Also, if I do get thermal paste designed to replace pads, what's the best method to apply it? I saw a YT video with someone applying quite a lot of K5-pro and it looked like the guy was putting way too much on. Does anyone have any recommendations for this?

IMO if your NB and VRM heatsinks are getting really hot then that means they are doing their jobs. TIM or thermal pads help transfer heat from the chips to the heatsinks. If they are hot then the pads are doing their jobs just fine. If they weren't hot and just warm then I would suggest replacing the pads. If you want to cool the heatsinks then place a fan/ fans blowing on the heatsinks. Most people think that a hot heatsink means they need to replace the TIM when its the exact oppostite!

PS: I have the 990FX killer mobo and the NB gets seriously hot as well. I've read that 990 chipsets are supposed to get hot as thats how they were designed. Just make sure your case has good air flow to remove the extra hot air that is coming off the NB. And position your CPU cooler so that the fan is exhausting toward the VRM's to help cool them as well.
