This will be my first pc build and when it comes to motherboards I just seem to get stuck due to the ridiculous amount of options. I will be either getting the Gigabyte G1 gaming edition or the MSI version of the gtx 980ti. I have a 250mb/s download internet speed so I would like to be able to make full use of that, as well as an option for wifi as I am going to uni in a couple months and am not certain if ethernet will be an option. Will be installing and SSD as well as an HDD. SLI will not be needed but if not too big of a price increase it wouldn't hurt. Will also be using the Enthoo Pro Case as well as the noctua nhd14 cpu cooler. If there is any other info that is important when choosing a mobo please tell me and I will add. Thank you in advance.

From their Website:
USB 3.0 ports and 2 less USB 2.0 ports,
Illuminated PWM (lights for aesthetics),
8 vs 6 Sata ports (You wont use that many anyway, better going for NAS)
OC Genie 4 / ClrCMOS / Power / Reset on motherboard (The gaming 5 can access this in the bios)
Multi-Bios II (two profiles to revert if an overclock is unsteady)
Displayport + 2...

Based on what you've said, Im guessing that you want to have a lot of functionality and options. If I were you, I would go with an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 or Gaming 7, depending on how much money you want to spend. They come with tones of options. Otherwise you could go with an Asus ROG board, but definitely look at these!

First off, thank you for the advice. I have been told these boards are very good, but I am having a hard time distinguishing between them. It seems like the gaming 7 simply offers some more 3.0 USB-ports than the gaming 5 which I really won't be needing, as I usually use 1-2 max at any given time. Doesn't seem like that is really worth an extra 50 bucks, or am I missing something?

Displayport + 2 HDMI ports (Dont use these anyway, use the GPU.)

Personally, if the price difference is marginal, then going for the Gaming 7 isn't a bad idea. However, since you dont use that many USB 3.0 ports...there isn't really much need to go for the Gaming 7. If I were you, go for the 5 or heck, even the 3 if you want, its better bang for your buck!
