Im new to building PCS but I have had a long time interest and would like to build one now.


These are my parts so fair. Please tell me if it is good and if anything is missing. Basically critique it.

Unless you're doing something with sound specifically, the sound card is unnecessary. Onboard sound is very good these days. The rest seems fine, the only thing I'd consider is a larger hard drive than the 1TB but if that storage is enough for you then go for it. You generally can get a 2TB drive for not much more than a 1TB drive costs, that difference is usually worth it.

I'm also assuming you're going for WiFi because you can't run an Ethernet cable. If your router would be in the same room, replace the WiFi card with an Ethernet cable.

Solid build. Nothing bad about it. BUT this is just my 2 cents.

With a 850 evo ssd ( or any ssd in general) I found windows 8 to be a snappy dream compared to 7. Took me a bit to convert form being a die hard 7 fan but windows 8.1 on a ssd was beautiful.

Other than that, pretty much every piece in your build is a reliable work of art. Can't go wrong with the hyper 212 or the classic design of a Thermaltake vX case. But for a couple bucks more, you can pick up a Corsair Spec 01. I find that 2 front intake fan's is really effective, and you get a clean side panel without any ugly cutouts to interfere with airflow. Not to mention usb 3, removable hdd tray and ssd mounting support.

and I'm pretty sure I don't have to point it out, but I hope you plan on pairing that 4790k with a beautiful r9 or gtx card :)

I don't know what your plans are for this build, so I'll keep an open mind and say 2 thumbs up ^_^.

I'll let someone else correct me if i am wrong, but i believe the only difference between a CPU with a K and without K is the ability to overclock. If you not you do not need at as K CPUs cost more.

Also, Windows 7 is ooollllddddd, MS is about 30 days away from Windows 10 launch (which is AMAZING) i have been using technical preview for 6 months now.

It used to be very uncommon because the older Xeons and the C2D or C2Q chips used different sockets. Both of these (Hasweel/Devils Canyon) use LGA1150.

There are mods available to "add" pins to LGA 771 Xeons so they will fit in LGA 775 motherboards.

The Xeon fits in a great place too.

K -spec CPUs only make sense if you are going to overclock them, otherwise you can save money on the chip and the chipset since the overclockability is not needed. With the Xeon, you also get no onboard graphics, which is fine for someone that has a discrete video card, because you weren't going to use it anyway. The Xeon also runs cooler because it uses less power because there are no onboard graphics to be powered, whether they are being used or not.

Then focus more on GPU power, even if you have to drop or downsize expensive parts like the SSD or 4790k, which is WAY too powerful for a 7770 anyway. Maybe 4690k, 970, 290 series, etc, and get the SSD later.

Also, the HDD and PSU are not the best for gaming. WD Black and Seasonic FTW.
