Hi there,

I am using a WD My Book Essential 2 TB External Drive, the problem is I can't access this drive. This drive does work on my LED Television when connected but it almost freezes my Windows Explorer and computer sometimes. The drive started to lag a lot somedays before I connected it to my TV.. It kept on flashing light and scanning. Then after some days I transferred video data and I wanted to check if I could run this drive on my TV. It did but now it doesn't work on my PC. I've ran the Disk Management and after a long long time displayed its partition which was RAW Partition. I tried to update the firmware but still the same. I've ran the chkdsk also but even after keeping my pc running for 2 1/2 days no results. Please help me as I want to recover the data in it.

Solution
Unfortunately this is not going to work. My Book drives have hardware encryption, which means that you won't be able to recover any data with the drive disconnected from its enclosure. Even if you manage to recover anything it would be encrypted and unusable.
Your only option in this case would be a data recovery company.
The only positive thing here is that if the drive is really OK, the enclosure must be the culprit, which means that you'll be able to use the HDD.
You could still try the suggested options with the drive connected to the enclosure and hopefully you get positive results.
Sorry that the news is so grim. :(
Hey there, marathawarrior.

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your drive. :(
Whenever there's doubt that there might be something wrong with an HDD, the first step should always be - data backup, to prevent the risk of losing your files. Also, the chkdsk command could lead to further data/partition corruption and it's not really recommended in such cases, where you need to recover data.
Now for the options at hand:
1. I'd recommend that you try it with another USB cable (shorter than 12") and another computer to see if the same thing happens.
2. Try accessing the drive via Linux Live CD/USB (this is basically a freeware, portable, bootable version of Linux), to see if it's able to properly recognize the partition/s so that you can get to your files.
3. Try with data recovery software - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
4. If all else fails, your best and mot reliable solution would be a data recovery company - WD Data Recovery Partners

Just FYI, don't go and test the drive with any HDD diagnostic tools, before you've recovered your data. If you manage to retrieve everything you need, then you could go ahead and test the drive with DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostic), to see what's the situation with the HDD. Here's how to do that: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows

I hope you're able to recover your files. Fingers crossed! Good luck!

I managed to remove the drive from the case and now its internally connected but now I can access the Disk Management and my pc is not freezing anymore. The warranty period has past 2 years ago so I thought lets try. The drive is shown and also the space in there is 1893.03 GB free shown in Disk Management but I had never formatted the drive and I am using the easeUS software for now its too slow though for recovering the files but I will surely try it with Linux too. Thanks. I'll keep you updated about whats going on.

Yes the data I recovered was encrypted and unusable I dunno what more I can do now with it having an encryption.
I'll try to get it to the nearest service center and get help from the company thank you soo much for helping me.
