Pc gaming on 720p TV looks better in 1080p

So I'm using a 42inch 720p TV as my monitor for the time being until I can afford an actual monitor. Some games fit the screen and look the best when I set them to 1024x768, but oddly enough most games I play look so much better when I set it to 1920x1080, and when I try 1024x768 on those games they look terrible and are letterboxed. Does my TV have a different native resolution than 1024x768? Any idea what's going on? I know that the TV will just scale it to its native resolution but it looks miles better in a 1080p setting...?

Sorry to here that, I got one of those years ago, I returned the same day.

But if it works for you .... OK.

I can't tell anyway without exact make and model.
(you could with the same info (make and model) do a search online)

I have a hunch that your 720P might actually be a 1080i capable.
Which explains why you might see some better image on games at 1080P.
(even though the 1080P is not real) but close enough.

After looking at the manual of that TV, it's native res is only 1024x768. With such a limited horizontal res, it cannot physically display even full 720p, let alone 1080p.

What is likely happening is it's down scaling 1080p to 1024x768. Unless of course you're doing this in game, in which case Nvdia's DSR or AMD's VSR would be doing that via the GPU.

The manual clearly states though that the best setting available on the res slider for your model is 1024x768, and only 1360x768 even on the 50" model.

Alright thanks guys, it was originally meant for gaming on a 360 and that worked fine but i recently joined the PC master race and now I just need a real monitor haha. But im curious, should i go for a large (maybe 30something inches) 1080p TV, or more like a good 27inch 1080p monitor?

Display choices involve considering many factors,...

1 Budget
2.Intended use
3. Placement
4. Lighting
5. Resolution
6. Preferences

Budget is obvious, but you should also consider balancing it to your build price wise.

If any of the intended use involves photo work, or even movies, you're probably going to want good image quality (IPS>VA>TN).

Is it going to go on a desk, or on a stand or table with distant seating?

Room lighting can determine whether you want a matte or gloss screen finish. Note that Plasma TVs reflect a LOT more light than LCD.

Resolution will obviously affect how powerful a GPU you need, but there's also refresh rate. Some prefer 1080p or 1440p at 120Hz-144Hz vs 4k.

Preferences in general include some of the above, plus whether you want a TV tuner built in, or speakers, or a stand with tilt, swivel, height adjust-ability, or even portrait mode.

What's your budget? A monitor will always be better than a TV for PC usage, but those larger monitors often come with a hefty price hike.
