I'm looking to upgrade my laptop's existing 1tb hard drive into a new 500gb 850 evo. I've seen tutorials on cloning, however have heard of issues when cloning larger drives into smaller ones. The original hdd has little more than windows 8.1 on in, however I would like to copy everything on it into the ssd, and boot from that drive. Then, I would like to partition the now external hard drive. Could I please be informed on the procedure needed to create a drive that i could replace with my hard drive and use as a primary drive? The laptop only has one drive slot.

cloning your drive will create an exact copy and will be bootable.your old hdd would be bootable as well in the event your ssd went down.ive used cloning for backup purposes for years and have had no problems.as long as there is enough space on the ssd for everything on the old hdd you are good to go.here is a link for the samsung migration tool.
