At 1080p the gtx 970 will be best. The 970 also gives out less heat and uses less power. At higher resolutions the 8gb vram at the r9 390 will come in use and beat the 970
A GTX will work but you will need to upgrade the PSU. It is only 280 watts, and is probably a low quality brand.

For a GTX 970 it is recommended to have a 500 watts PSU, more important it should be able to provide 28 amps on the 12 volt line.

It is not that bad, considering you could build a similar system (including windows 8) for about £700 (without the software bundles, which in my opinion is usually just extra work to uninstall). Of course then you get to pick your own components which would in general be of better quality, but you would have to do the work of assembling and installing it all.

the problem with buying these pre built systems is that they over charge for whats in it.
other problem is once opened and booted and setup GOOD LUCK trying to send that back to the company. they dont touch opened goods.

GPU wise i would go for GTX970 or above.
Power supply wise go for 550w+ Gold.
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-evga-supernova-650-g1-full-modular-80plus-gold-135mm-fan-atx-power-supply
something like that will do.
Also bit of advise. dont go for the "Reference" cards. go a bit higher for pre overclocked. look at clock speeds of each GPU and go for one with nice speeds.
eg: reference card clock 1042mhz, the some others will have 1104mhz so on and so forth.

Lastly for next build.
use www.scan.co.uk
www.ebuyer.com
and other sites like this to build from scratch.
for that cash and the cash you now want to put into it to make it gaming ready which is about 300 to 330 quid. You could have scraped together a new higher end CPU/mobo with DDR4 ram solid state and few other tweaks.

Happy hunting

For 1080p a gtx 970 will play everything at ultra 60fps. As for psu to the gtx 970 minimum you need is a quality 500w psu with 28a on 12v rail. Any psu from evga, xfx and seasonic will do
