Ubuntu 14.04 Wireless Issues: Connect Through Windows Machine or Adapter?

Hey guys,

I finished building a new pc with some spare parts and I hope to turn it into a media/file server or something similar with Ubuntu 14.04.02(desktop). Never used Ubuntu before, so I'm learning as I go with the OS, playing around with settings and whatnot. Really excited to learn more about Ubuntu.

Now to business. I set the operating system up without any issues, other than the fact it won't read my Belkin N600 DB v2 wireless stick. This is a pretty big problem for me, as my router is located on another floor of my house, so I don't have direct Ethernet access (I could plug in, but I would have to haul a lot of crap down a flight of stairs, set up shop, etc.; don't want to do that ). I have to use wireless sticks on my desktops since they're on a different floor.

Is there any possible way I could connect my ubuntu machine to my Windows 8 laptop and use that internet connection for my Ubuntu machine? I'm just looking for a temporary way to connect until I can either find a way to use my Belkin stick or just buy an internal card for it that's supported by ubuntu. This is turning into a real headche.

If you guys have any suggestions on either getting the wireless stick mentioned before working or connecting through windows, please let me know. I'm a noob with Ubuntu and any help would be greatly appreciated.

If needed, here are my system specs-
AMD FX-6100 3.3Ghz
WD Green 7200 RPM 2TB HDD
G,Skill Ripjaw 4GB 1600Mhz Memory (Single Stick)
Asus M5a78m-lx Plus Motherboard
Kingwin 650w PSU
Ubuntu 14.04.02

Thanks guys.

It has no driver in the kernel. You must compile r8192du (WIP) driver (same as link above)

You can get the source code here (the compile errors appear to have been fixed):
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8192du

In the future you should get wireless cards with chipsets that have known good linux drivers, like those from atheros or intel. Generally PCI devices are better than USB.

You can always find well supported cards here:

I did try that and it did not work for me. Ndiswrapper also didn't work so I think I'll just buy a new wireless adapter.

What do you guys think of this one? It's not PCIe but it looks like it will work very well (probably better than my belkin dongle). It's manufactured by Panda Wireless, which makes Ubuntu-supported devices.
