So the oculus rift specs have been out for some time now, and it's saying an r9 290 will be enough. I have the 290x so I meet min requirements. But I'm thinking that will be the game with all settings on low. Iv been gaming with games on ultra for years now so I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as I'd like if I have to set settings to low

Does anyone have any knowledge on this or our we all in the unknown

I know I can upgrade my gpu but I game on a 150" screen @ 1080 and i definetly wont be changing my display for a long time until 4k projectors are in my price range, so my 290x is perfect so I will only be upgrading for the rift alone

That will be highly dependent on the game. If I asked you whether a 290x is enough for 4K you couldn't really answer me without more information. If we were talking about something simple like Rogue Legacy the answer would be yes. If were talking about something more intense like Witcher 3 the answer would be no.

Whether a card is suitable for 4K depends just as much on the game in question as it does on the monitor resolution. The same will be true for Oculus and other VR.

Oculus Specs

Here is some more information. The two screens in the Oculus rift add up to a total resolution of 2160 x 1200 and they run at 90Hz. If your 290x can play a game at that resolution and hold 90fps you should have a good experience with that game on the Oculus.

Obviously you can play at a lower fps than 90 but if you start to dip too low it might cause things like motion sickness which is already a problem for some VR games even at the full 90fps. I definitely wouldn't want to go below 60fps in a VR headset.

Well a 290x can't not push out 90fps at that res I can guarantee that haha. At 1080 I get low 30fps in certain games. But I read an article about about the rift that it would only render pixels that are seen and not the full image if that makes sense. So I assumed the gpu would not have to work as hard to get that high res that's need. So the center of the frame would be at full res and the edges of the frame would be something like 720
