The 750ti is not good for the money unless power efficiency is extremely important to you. I would go for a r9 270x or a r9 280 which has reached $150 recently on newegg.

Both are much more powerful than the 750ti

Here are benchmarks to show that the r9 280 completely wrecking the 750 ti in all games while costing about the same.

I really have no idea why the 750 ti was recommended. Tom's should have used the older 200 series, which are the same gpu's but at a lower price. Even with the r9 370, it beats the 750ti in most games, although consuming more power.
