Now a lot of people are saying that GTX 980 for 1080p gaming, even with dual monitor setup is pointless and overkill. What I'm curious to know is, the GTX 970 is only running 3.5GB of VRAM (which is plenty still, and the core and memory clocks aren't that different from the 980s) That being said... Money isn't really an issue for me, but if it REALLY isn't worth the extra for the 980, then I suppose there isn't any reason to buy it.

What I'm wondering is, the 980 with it's actual 4GB of VRAM, and the slightly better performance, will last me at least 3 years, allowing me to effectively max out the settings on most current and future gen games... Would the GTX 970 give me the same performance and would it stand the test of time just as well as the GTX 980?

I suppose, what I'm asking here is...

3.5GB vs. 4 GB VRAM
slightly slower clock speeds vs. slightly faster
decent binned GPU vs. best binned GPU (or at least, best when we're not talking Titans... which I do not have the money for)

Are these differences big enough for me to fork out the extra $~200-300~ ?

Should I just hold off until Black Friday for this?

(Of course, people, I didn't forget to tell you my current specs)

CPU: i7 4770k
MOBO: MSI microATX, only one pcI E x16 slot, so no SLi for me :(
GPU: GTX 645 (piece of shit, but it gets the job done for now)
RAM: 12GB at ddr3 @ 1600mhz
PSU: 600W, with 2x 6 pin connectors for PCI-E (so I can use the GTX 970 or 980)
HD: 128 GB SSD, and 2 TB HDD (in a RAID setup, with 2 extra RAID slots open but not utilized ATM)

I think that's about all the specs that are relevant here... So yea... what's your guys opinion?

Wait it out til Black Friday? get the GTX 970 ? Get the GTX 980? Wait til the next generation of GPU's from nVidia?

Every so often new graphics cards come out making older cards worth less money. Personally I would just get the 970 if you don't have a good pc already, but if you can wait til 2016 for Pascal to come out then I would. I'm in high school so I don't really have the money for top cards anyway.

personally I would just wait for the next generation cards, then all the prices will change, but if you can't the 970 is a card that should be able to overclock very well. Personally I like gigabytes wind force cards.
