Installed Wrong Chipset Driver; Lost Control of Mouse and Keyboard

In my efforts to fix up this old Dell Dimension 5150 XP that I have, I tried to install a chipset driver that I thought was missing. Apparently, it wasn't, and I have lost all control of the mouse and keyboard, both of which are USB.

There are no PS2 ports for either of them. The funny thing is, when I insert a flash drive into one of the ports, it pops up on the screen, like its connected.

Is it possible to boot into safe mode having only the USB mouse and keyboard (not that I don't own PS2 mice and keyboards, there just isn't any connection)? Would safe mode even work?

I decided I better ask some other people before I restart the computer and really put myself out in the dark. At last resort, I have the install disk, and I better hope it boots from the disk in that case, because all that works right now is the power button.

Try it.

Good point, good point... well thankfully, this driver change has not penetrated into bios, and the keyboard does work. The reason I was hesitant was because that computer also has Ubuntu installed on it, and a choice needs to be made by the user using the keyboard. In the worst case scenario, I would get stuck in the pre-boot zone, limiting my options for possibly solving the issue. Maybe I'm just being overly cautions...

Anyway, from here, I'll try to boot into safe mode and use system restore to get back to my pre-issue system correct?

Alright then, what should my plan of attack be then. Driver rollback?

Well, I restored to a previous state without the troublesome chipset, and we are back in business. Thanks for all your help! It is likely, however, that this computer in particular will need to posted about again in the future.
