Everyone says BAD idea....It Won't work.
But no one will be specific about the consequences.

WHAT won't work?
Will my MoBo explode?
Will any memory at all be detected and work?
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN I BOOT UP AFTER ADDING?:bounce:

Solution

Should be fine, the only situation I could think of would be if you decided to use DDR2 and...

Mismatched capacity sticks CAN work together, they just have a lower rate of pairing successfully. Memory controllers used to be much more picky, so the combination of older motherboard and different stick behaviors could see problems. Now memory upgrades are very common and motherboard manufacturers recognize that users like the value of being able to keep their old RAM and only buying half as much new RAM.

If it doesn't work, just take out the old sticks. Worst case scenario it doesn't like the old pair working with the new one at all, best case it works fine and there's no need for the controller to limit either pair's performance.

Your motherboard will not explode.

Thanks for giving me a clear and lucid answer, much appreciated.
On that basis I will try adding the extra memory, I'm happy enough to end up with just 4GB which would be a 100% incerase and more than adequate for my needs, I just wanted not to waste the original 2GB if at all possible.:)
These are details of my MoBo , existing and proposed additional RAM.
...just in case you can see any obvious problem or offer any further advice.
Thanks again.

Just noticed, Dropbox seems to be somewhat lacking in it's ability to correctly display PDF's, the red gobbldygook at the bottom of the last link should read:-
This is the additional RAM I was considering,
I think it's the closest available to the existing. (visually!)

Should be fine, the only situation I could think of would be if you decided to use DDR2 and DDR3 on the same board (some boards had slots for both) in which case it is impossible to run both at the same time.

Just noticed that on the data for my existing RAM, it says:-
"•Tested together at 1333MHz, Vdimm = 1.70V, at latency settings of 9-9-9-24"
One point seven volts? :??:
