Hi there ghudspeth,
What is your OS? In case it is Win 8, you can disable several services like: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2027511/windows-disk-usage-100-problem.html
In case the issue persists, you can check your drive's health status out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Keep in mind that you need to back up the data stored on the drive if the test results show that there is something wrong with it.
Something simple as just changing both cables(power and SATA one) and connecting the drive to another port will not hurt as well.
