Hello

From my research so far, I've found out that when doing SLI with two graphics cards on this particular motherboard, the speed of the PCI X16 slots will run at 8x, instead of both 16x

Are two 980 Ti's in SLI at 8x speed going to bottleneck at all, or will it handle the bandwidth just fine?

Is the Z97 chipset still a relevantly modern motherboard for a good choice for today?
I am thinking of getting the Asus Maximus VII Ranger with an Intel 4790/K and selling my existing GTX 970 for a GTX 980 Ti and eventually SLI with two 980 ti's down the road, to enable the swift transaction to 4K gaming. Two 970's should handle 1440p fine, but I'm still considering to just purchase another GTX 970 instead; however, what I'd like to know, is if two GTX 980 ti's in SLI running at 8x will perform just as well at the slower speed? Thanks!

One more question.. If I purchase this P1-850B-BEFX XFX Pro Series (850W) Black Edition Power Supply Unit Full Modular, will it work with the motherboard in question too, or will I have to buy an additional 24 pin adapter? Much appreciated!

Solution
Two GPUs in SLI on that motherboard will force each card to run in x8 mode since the chipset supports up to 16 PCI-E lanes. It will hardly be a bottleneck at all since the difference between PCI-E 3.0 x16 and x8 is hardly noticeable. Also, the PSU will work with the motherboard out of the box.
