Brand New HDD that keeps shutting off randomly

Hey guys, I just built a new custom system and I have noticed something strange with my new seagate 1TB HDD. I can hear it kick off and then spin back up at random times. Sometimes it just keeps doing it multiple times in a row where I have to do a hard reset on the PC. It never crashes windows, because windows just resumes what it was doing when it gets spun back up. This is weird behavior, i'd expect this from a hard drive that's nearing death, and not from one that just got unwrapped. If fact, it has done this shut off and restart cycle about twice while I typed this. I have windows 8.1 on here. Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks

Solution
Given all the things you've tried, I guess there is something wrong with the HDD. Sometimes, software tools can't detect some physical flaws.
You can just contact the manufacturer.

Hi there Lanzersys,

As there could be something wrong with the drive, you need to back up the data stored on the drive.

After that, you can just try something simple as just using different cables(SATA and power ones). You can connect it to another SATA port as well.
In case the issue persists, it may be a good idea to download a brand specific testing tool. In case the test results show that the HDD is faulty, I would advise you to contact its manufacturer.

Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestions, but I still have the issue.

I ran the seagate testing tools, all passed. It seems to do it completely randomly, and it just happened to not do that during the tests. I have built identical systems using this same drive model, and never had an issue until now. Guess this will have to be returned under warranty or something, i've tried different ports and cables. same issues. I put a new drive in this current build as well and it's working fine

Well, this is fun. So I got a brand new drive, and this one is even an SSHD and guess what? It's still doing it.. What would be your next thought? I'm beginning to point fingers at my motherboard. It's a new gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H

Well, after several days back and forth with Gigabyte, they finally told me to put a Western Digital drive in, and what do ya know? Everything works smooth and has been fine for a few days now.

I guess the GA-F2A88XM-D3H has a hate for Seagate and loves WD. Works for me I guess, i'll just get WD Blue drives from here on for this board.
