Windows 7 vs Windows 8.1 for Gaming?

Solution

again whichever is cheaper. They both come with a free upgrade to windows 10. and you will want windows 10. It supports dx12 and is coming out in 1 month

if they are exactly the same price just get windows 8 because it is newer and closer to windows 10

Windows 10 is coming out for free in a month so honestly i would get whatever is cheaper. leaning on the side of windows 8 because it has faster boot up times and a few other things going for it. You must install classic shell if you get windows 8

1 or 2 percentage points either way, depending on the specific game. Not a lot of difference.

i'm pretty sure most people would much rather have a start menu. I cant stand windows without it.

'Most people...?'

Most used apps pinned to the autohide TaskBar, for everything else, there is WIN+S.
Much easier and faster than trying to navigate a multi level old style start menu.

To each his own, I guess.
But saying "you must install classic shell" is a bit of a stretch.

For gaming performance, it does not matter if Windows 7 or 8. Windows 8 is newer and will have longer support. There could be some incompatibilities between games or applications, but that is not problematic like in older days. There is no reason, not to take Windows 8 over 7. But don't get the lower Home edition and take the 64-Bit version, so you can use more than 4gb ram.
