So, I'm building my first ever gaming PC in about a week or so and I was wondering should I install Windows 10 insider preview or Windows 8.1. Since you can now get Windows 10 for free when it officially launches with both of them. I was thinking that windows 10 insider preview would best because then you wouldn't have to do a clean install and get everything deleted right? Because I'm inferring that it would just keep getting patched until it's stable, again I'm no tech wizard so if I'm wrong with anything please, by any means, correct me. Also insider preview is FREE but I can get windows 8.1 for insanely cheap because I'm a student, I'm talking like $15. I no Windows 10 Insider Preview is not very stable at the moment, that's why it's a preview, but if it's not too difficult I think I can manage. I think that was everything that I had been pondering, now I would really like your guys takes on this. Thanks and I will be looking forward toward your responses!

windows 10 can do an inplace upgrade without losing anything

tested it 3 or 4 times since the beginning of the insider preview

worked every time without any data loss

i expected it to because hundreds of millions of people are going to do inplace upgrades through windows update come 29th of july

Win 8.1, then upgrade to the release of Win 10.
If you get the Win 10 Insider Preview today, the only way you can keep it for free is to remain a participant in the Insider Preview program. Meaning you will get whatever updates and changes they push, when they want to push them.

In effect, you are a permanent beta tester.

If you decide to opt out of the Insider Preview program, you must either upgrade an existing Win 7 or 8.1, or actually buy Win 10.

Oh okay so I have to windows 8.1. One more thing its better to do a clean install on Win 10 when it launches then upgrade to it right? And it will be coming in the form of an update so is a clean install possible? if so, how?

i would imagine once its released there will be the option to download it as an iso to use for a clean install--though probably require some sort of verification of your existing windows

the majority of pc users have no idea what to do with an iso to enable a clean install--hence using windows update will apply to most users

Current statements from MS:

---------------------------------------------------------
Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

So, after you upgrade, you will be able to obtain an ISO file.
Use this to create your install media, and do a full clean install.
