When the number of players on a server gets very very large I often get a massive slowdown. I was wondering what the cause of this is? Is my CPU pushed beyond maximum or what?

I have i5 4690k @ 3.5 Ghz, 16Gb RAM, r9 270

Yes, your system can't handle all the extra calculations for lots of players.

Just think about it: your bandwidth demands go up in every way: CPU has to calculate more player locations in the world, your computer has to exchange more data with the server, your graphics card has to render more events, and lastly, the server you are playing on has many more calculations (movements, projectiles, health, damage, etc) to make.

Everything involved has an increased workload, therefore, your performance goes down.

Play on maps with less players is the sure way to get the performance back.

You can also try turning your graphics settings down, but it sounds like it's an issue with the number of players on the map. Most people seem to have a slowdown when you get above 32 players. 64 player maps really cause trouble for most mid range PCs.
