using the Asrock x99 itx board with the i7 5820k and an H100i water cooler inside of the Corsair 250D case. Im getting like about 35-37c while typing this and downloading games on steam at the moment. Is that normal for this CPU? My radiator fans blow out by the way.

No, it's not worth the trouble. Again, everyone makes super low temps seem like something they MUST achieve. It's not really worth the trouble unless you really want to brag to people on a forum somewhere.

I have not had experience with your specific setup, but those are fine temps. What do they go to when you game?

Everyone makes a huge deal with getting temps down as low as possible when it really doesn't matter at all.

I plan to keep this set up for many many years (I have a 980ti as well!) so I want cool and quiet and be able to squeeze all the life I can out of this new rig. I have not tried too much gaming with it yet as Im downloading games now. I ran Prime95 for a few minutes and my system got to about 42-44 and I didn't keep the test running after that.

The idle temps that they are reporting with a 4.5ghz OC are the same temps I'm getting at stock speed....

non overclocked idle is 33 overclocked its 36 thats only 3 degrees nothing to worry about. The thermal paste used could be different. Your temps are good dont worry

Did it become stable at 42-44 with Prime95? If so, then you are fine. Nothing to worry about.

Having a cool temp is good, but it is not going to make any difference in the life of your CPU. A CPU that is in the 50s vs the 40s will have the same real world life to it. The CPU is going to fail from some other reason besides being a little warmer for years and years. The biggest reason it will "fail" is because it just gets old and you want a new computer. :)

Edit: the overclock or some miscalculation of voltage is much more likely to cause you long term problems than it being warmer. The CPU still has tons of thermal headroom to still be in spec. You are good!

Just ran it again. Stayed at about 44-46. After turning it off, my CPU now hovers around the 36-38 mark and wont cool down from that. I wonder if it is a paste issue?

Do you think wiping off the thermal paste and getting new stuff would be worthwhile? It will be a big hassle for a few reasons though

As long as I am safe with this set up, I'll just rock my rig and be happy with what I got! Thanks!!

im overclocked to 4.5ghz on this 5820k at 1.28 volts my idol right now is 35-37c gaming is about 45-50c well under the thermal limits of this cpu. Im using a swiftech h220x liquid all in 1 cooler for my cooling btw.

Before i was overclocked i was getting temps around 28-31c at idol.

So Those are my results from this cpu.

In other words, I either have a crap cooler (H100i) or a hot CPU?

im not even overclocked at all and im getting much higher temps than your OCed idling temps

i would try using some noctua thermal paste or some Tim mate. and try and redo your thermal compound. what i did this time is a nice layer on the cpu with a credit card then a nice thin layer on my water block, didnt want to take any chances . so i know i got full coverage across the waterblock and cpu
