About a week and half ago I was going to buy the gigabyte r9 285 for $170 after rebate but since the new 300 series was coming out I decided to wait. I know the r9 380 is a rebrand r9 285 with a higher clock speed. I was wondering if it would be worth it to squeeze in the extra $30. I want to save as much money as possible. So which one should I get? What does the r9 380 have (besides a higher clock speed) that the r9 285 doesn't?

Solution
I believe the 300 series has full DX12 support whereas the 200 series does not. So when DX12 comes out, the 300 series will have access to a few nice graphics features that the 200 series does not. But, it isn't going to be a huge difference in general. You're looking at a 3-5% improvement (just a rough estimate) getting a 380 over a 285. So it's up to you if that's worth it.

It won't have full support but it will get a nice yet unknown performance improvement. You will have to buy a new card that comes with Direct x12 to get full support.

Basically all graphics cards are going to see improvements with dx12. I'm not sure what you mean by having to buy a new card that "comes with" Dx12... the 300 series and the 900 series from nvidia will fully support dx12. No graphics card "comes with" it, it's software that is supposedly coming with windows 10.

No, not all GPUs are going to see an improvement. DX 11.1 cards will take advantage of a lot of the driver and software tech that will come in Windows 10, but if you want the full benefits of DX12, you're going to need a DX12 card.
