Problem with new Mobo

Just recently bought a used msi z87-g45 gaming mobo and tried hooking my power supply up. It does not work, but the power supply does uses the 24 connector but not the 8. Is the 8 also needed with this mobo?

The motherboard was bought off of ebay and i have contacted the seller. Hopefully he can give me some insight. The mobo does have the 8 pin connector while the power supply has only a 4
