Will sata 1 work witg sata 3 slots?

I am building a new pc and was wondering if I can use my old PCs HDD and optical drive. They are using sata 1 and my new motherboard will have sata 3 slots. I will buy a new HDD too.

I would like to add to USAFRet's answer that it will work just fine but it will only run at SATA I speeds (150 MB/s).
