Hello,i want to upgrade my 2Gigs memory to 4,my motherboard got 2 slots, gonna buy 2x4GB DDR2 memory,i have 8600gt 512mb , can i install 4gb memory on 32 bit? currently im using Windows 7 Proffesional 32 bit, i will use all 4gb memory? which will be faster,32 bit or 64?

Solution
You can install that 4GB, but it will be limited to ~3.5GB actual usable RAM.

If you want to go to the 64bit install, that requires a full reinstall.

32 bit operating systems can take up to 16gb of ram. Want more you need 64 bit operating system. Motherboards also will have limits per slot and total, but 2 2gb sticks should be fine.

No 32-bit operating systems can only support 4 GB or less. For Linux you can use PAE and use 64 GB in a 32 bit OS. Windows "supports" PAE however they still have hard coded limits on some versions so even with PAE you can't access more than 4 GB.

As others mentioned before, 32bits OS can only handle around 3.5GB of RAM, regardless of how much physical RAM you have installed.

If you plan to later get more RAM (8GB+) you'd better installing 64bits now to avoid the need of a full reinstall when upgrading your RAM.

You're right, didn't have my coffee yet. Will wake up any minute now.
