Approximate Purchase Date: This week.
Budget Range: $700-850 after rebates/shipping
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming
Are you buying a monitor: Yes, but does not factor into this cost. Open to recommendations for 24"+ monitors. Looking to splurge a little, $300-400, for something awesome since I haven't upgraded my monitor in 10 years. I'm also open to a dual monitor gaming setup if that's more bang for my buck.
Parts to Upgrade: None.
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: amazon.com, newegg.com
Location: Ogden, UT, USA
Parts Preferences: NVIDIA GPU - My understanding is NVIDIA currently has the edge. If that understanding is incorrect, I have nothing against AMD.
Overclocking: No - I've built two PCs in the past and haven't overclocked either.
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe
Monitor Resolution: 1680x1050 - This will likely change with the purchase of a new monitor.

Additional Comments: I'd like to have a SSD and 16 GB RAM. Would be nice for it to be relatively quiet. I'd like a build without a DVD drive. I never use the one on my current PC, but I could salvage it if I really needed it.

I'm looking to use Steam Link to play some games on my TV.

The only future proofing I'm interested in is adding RAM or upgrading the GPU. It's rare I upgrade my PC (maybe once) in the 5-6 years I use it.

Why Are You Upgrading: My current PC would barely scrape by trying to run some of the currently released games like Wolfenstein, Shadows of Mordor, and Witcher 3. And, I want to be sure I can play future releases like Fallout 4, Overwatch, and X-COM2.

Thanks to anyone who recommends builds.

Should I be concerned about the compatibility notes for this build?

Compatibility Notes

  • ■ Asus Z87-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard has an onboard USB 3.0 header, but the NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case does not have front panel USB 3.0 ports.
    ■ Some Intel Z87 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs.
    ■ The NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 330mm long, but video cards over 230mm may block drive bays. Since the Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card is 280mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

Apologies, I did not notice the notes when I threw the build together. The only notes to be concerned about have to do with the case I chose.

Here is the same build with a better case that eliminates those concerns http://pcpartpicker.com/p/b37Tgs

As far as the motherboard note goes, you should not run into any problems, However if you do updating your BIOS is very easy to do. Look it up on Youtube and voila.

Dont get Z87 motherboard its an old model
And PSU EVGA NEX is not very quality one, you can get top quality PSU for alot less the one in my build is top quality

@rowdymoody you cant just update motherboard BIOS without running PC, if hes motherboard would need BIOS update for it wot work with i5 4460 he would need to get non Haswell Refresh CPU to use to go on Asus website and download new BIOS

For under $1,000, would you make any changes? I tried looking for better deals on part picker, but didn't want to stray too much from the recommendations. I did end up mixing and matching the different builds a little.

How much does the CAS Latency on the RAM matter? Is saving $10 and going with latency of 9 going to even be noticeable?

I threw in a few dollars more for a 500GB SSD and dropped the standard HDD.

I switched to the Phanteks case. I'm not sure if I'm just throwing money away there. I figured the removable dust covers would be handy (it's pretty dusty where I'm located) and it's supposed to have pretty good air flow. Maybe I'm better off saving $50-60 there?

It ends up being a little more than I intended, but in looking at monitors they're a little cheaper than I expected. So I have a little more to put into the PC.

Thanks

Okay I'm fairly new to computers but I've been doing my research. The cases I saw you guys chose were like 70+ USD. I found a cheap 70$ CAD case with 7 fan slots (is slots even the right word?), USB 3 and a nice see through side panel.
Obviously US will be cheaper so that's a few dollars saved that you can throw for the other parts.

$44 US.

I'm debating between the NZXT S360 and the Phanteks Enthoo Pro case. Plan on buying everything on the 15th to see if Amazon has any deep discounts on Prime Day.

Solution goes to Xemko since it's closest to my build. The advice on RAM and case was also greatly appreciated.

turbopiki, thanks for the advice and help. I may have ran into an issue with the older motherboard without your help. Also, I appreciate your help with the PSU.

Again, thanks to everyone for help with my build.
