Windows 8.1: Start Menu Unusable

Hi there,

I currently use a windows 8.1 laptop which I've had for two years now. A couple of months ago the start menu and all start menu apps became unusable. This meaning that whenever I click any of the apps, they instantly crash and will not work. This disallows me from updating my computer or resetting my computer to factory mode for an easy fix. I have checked for viruses on both McAfee and Malwarebytes (free version) with both saying I'm free of viruses. I'm assuming this means there is something wrong with the files. I'm not an especially tech savvy person and so I'd need fairly simple instructions on how to fix this - assuming there is a fix to this.

Oh, and one last thing - I used this tool https://www.dropbox.com/s/0u0au9xgy6ss18p/win10fix_full.zip?dl=0 to try and get the Get Windows 10 app and reserve a copy of windows 10 for myself. When doing this it said I was missing the KB3035583 update. I'm not quite sure what that is but maybe its a part of the windows 8.1 update that did not download for some reason? I dont know.

Thanks

Hey AVirusC. Can you try to install the latest Windows updates? Follow these steps:

1. Press "Windows + R" on the keyboard at the same time
2. Enter "control wuaucpl.cpl" (without the speech marks) and press 'Ok'
3.Select 'Check for Updates'
4. Install all updates shown, including the optional ones

Let me know whether this fixes your issue or not.

Hi harryfishrules - thanks for the reply.

I followed the directions and installed all that was available (one optional update), however this didn't fix the problem. Any other suggestions?

EDIT: After using the Check for Updates feature, I realized there were actually 49 important updates and 13 optional updates... Good thing I used it haha. Anyways, I'll write again once the updates finish installing

EDIT 2: They all installed except for one - http://i.imgur.com/fAn8voi.jpg?1
The updates that did install didn't really fix the problem - though it did allow me to reserve a copy of windows 10, which when out, will allow me to be able to install Windows 10 as a way to set my computer to factory mode and hopefully fix this computer of any problems.

Could you follow these instructions please:
1. When turning on the PC, repeatedly press F8
2. Boot into 'Safe mode with Command Prompt'
3. When Command Prompt appears, enter "sfc /scannow" (without the speech marks) followed by enter
4. Allow the scan to complete fully
5. Restart into the normal desktop

Let me know how this goes and the results of the scan.
