I am an architecture student about to buy a computer. I am going to be using it almost entirely for workstation programs such as revit, autocad, adobe cloud, 3ds max, etc. I am looking between two different setups, and I am curious what might be better.

I will have a Nvidia Quadro k4200 graphics card along with 32 GB of ram. I am just wondering if it is a better idea to go cheaper with the 4790 and z-97 motherboard or for an extra $400 go with the 5820k and x-99. I am willing to spend the extra money, I just do not know if it is worth it. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

If the programs can use the gpu to render, then most likely the 4790 will be fine as u have a dedicated card for it, but if it requires cpu rendering then the 5820k will be beneficial. I dont use the programs so i dont know how they use cores and gpu for rendering, but the 4790 should be fine, but the 5820k is quite a bit better with rendering as it has 2 extra cores or 4 extra threads.

If ur near a microcenter, u can get a 5820k and board for the price of z97 and 4790k at retail from newegg or amazon. The cpu is only about $60 more than the 4790k, and DDR4 is getting quite close to ddr3 pricing, so really its the motherboard as the cheapest x99 is $180, and Z97 can get lower than $100

I'm not positive about the other programs but autocad's software relies more on fewer faster cores rather than 6-8 cores. The 5820k may make a difference in the others, you'd have to look at the program recommended hardware or possibly user forums where people discuss various builds and performance.
