Moving what I can from my Alienware X51 into a new case

So it all started with me wanting a new graphics card. I realized that the case was pretty small and wouldn't fit many good graphics cards and I would most likely need a new psu to use one, so I decided on taking what I can out of the build and buying some new stuff.

What seems like I will be reusing is the processor, the HDD, and the RAM.

My question is: Since windows is installed on the HDD, what will happen when it's moved to a different case with a new motherboard? Basically I need to know if I need to get a new copy of windows.

That's not necessarily true.

With Win7 - whether you need to buy new copy of windows depends on what version you have installed. An OEM version is a one-time use - locking the key to the motherboard.

However, a retail copy can be moved from machine to machine.

It's a mess from what I recall. If I'm not mistaken, you have to deactivate it on the original motherboard first before moving the disk... I upgraded MOBOs a few years ago and had to jump through a couple of hoops before being able to continue on, but boy was I glad I sprang for the full version over OEM! :D

I know it's been a while, but since I don't really have anything too important, should I just format it before using it in the new build?
