HDD does not fit in enclosure. Is it safe to use it just with the usb cable?

So my HDD does not fit in the enclosure that i bought because it is expanded in the 2 sides of the front of the HDD just for the screws.. That doesn't really matter. I want to know if i can still use my HDD without the cover of the enclosure but just the part that connects my HDD with the Computer with the usb cable. And of course i want to know if it is perfectly safe, if not what would you suggest me to do?

it should work but it will not be as easily portable and would make it much easier to damage the drive. SATA plugs are not rated for many insertion cycles and it would be better for you to leave it in the enclosure. Did you buy the wrong type of enclosure? otherwise it should work.

No its just that there is a metal thingy that is screwed in the HDD, i tried to remove it but messed up the screws and cannot be removed now.. i did that 3 years ago and i cant realy do anything else to remove it without damaging the HDD. The cover of the enclosure is needed only to keep the HDD a bit cool and of course safe? right? What if i made a wooden enclosure in which my HDD can fit, would that be any problem?
