I will describe my setup, the issues I have been having, and the troubleshooting I have performed thus far.

Below is a network setup for a small business:

Are internet provider is birch communications. The router they provided us is a Cisco 2900 series router. We also have a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router and a Netgear JFS524 switch.

Now, I am unable to connect the Netgear N600 router to the cisco router directly for internet connectivity whether I use a straight-through OR a crossover wired cable. Instead, I have to connect the Netgear switch to the Cisco router first. And then connect the Netgear router to the Netgear switch to get internet connectivity for wireless and wired connections. We have an extra Netgear router, N 300 wireless router WNR2000 and still the same issue with that router as well using the above mentioned setup.

Now, we will be purchasing a router/firewall soon from Sophos, the SG 125 W, and my concern is that I will not be able to connect the firewall directly to the Cisco router for filtering all traffic. Instead, it may only allow me connect the router/firewall to the switch which is unacceptable.

Now, I will be calling my internet provider soon to address my concerns but before I do, I want to see if there may be something else that I may have done wrong in my setup that maybe contributing to this.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

Why would you connect the NetGear N600 to the Cisco 2900? Having a switch between the two devices makes perfect sense to me.

Anyway, having a firewall between the LAN and the Cisco 2900 won't be a problem assuming that the correct ports are connected and have the appropriate configuration. The WAN port on the firewall will need to have a WAN IP address allocated to it as this is what the clients will use as the default gateway. The port itself will also need to be configured with its own default gateway, subnet mask and DNS servers. The default gateway is the WAN IP address of the Cisco 2900 and the subnet mask and DNS servers are specified by your ISP.

Obviously, the LAN connection goes to the NetGear switch and you can take it from there.
