I restart the Toshiba Satellite laptop. I don't even see the mouse cursor at all. Just totally unresponsive forcing me to reboot. Once in a blue moon, it'll load windows the 1st time but 8/10 times it'll just be completely black while the lights on the laptop are blinking. I can't even see the cursor, just completely black. Please help? I'm afraid all this forcing a reboot will damage the data stored on my HD. Thanks in advance.

Solution
I'd start with a clean Windows setup. Hopefully you made backups of your files already, if not, do that before you do anything else. Get a new hard drive, install Windows on that, see if it starts up OK.

OK, that points to some other hardware issue, try different RAM, maybe the display or video card or motherboard are bad.

First thing though, if you are worried about data loss, and you should be always, make a backup of your files.

Your hard drive probably needs a CHKDSK scan or it has to be defragmented, if not, burn a CD of Ubuntu and Boot the CD and choose try ubuntu then backup your files using files

Toshiba should have system utilities either as a download or in the BIOS to check hardware. If not, a boot disk like Ultimate Boot CD or HIRENS has several hard drive checks. MEMTEST can be used to test the RAM.

Ran CHKDSK, last I saw it had 0 errors but it restarted after 3 hrs. so scan Im not sure. I ran the defrag and analyzed the drive but defrag button was grayed out so I assume it wasn't needed. Ran The windows memory test and 0 errors. I will try to burn a CD of Ubuntu and Boot the CD tomorrow along with a few suggestions here I haven't tried yet. It still doesn't start up on the first try, getting frustrated. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Please note if your laptop is 32bit or 64bit when downloading the image.

Laptop starts perfectly last 4 times when power source is not charging laptop at startup. I just plug it in after it boots up. The battery still holds a charge (replaced 2 years ago) so what could this mean?

Did you replace it with an OEM battery or a copy?

Try starting it on wall power without the battery.

Do you see the TOSHIBA logo on screen after you press the power button?

Froze w/o the battery, worked with it plugged back in. Since booting up w/o the power source it hasn't failed to load windows yet. The battery only holds 97% of the charge but seems to be good in working order. It is a OEM replacement. Not sure what it is but at least I found a temporary solution.
