I spent a lot of time searching on web before posting this, i had an issue with my BRAND NEW GTX 970.

I bought the card via amazon, a few days ago i received it at home, installed it on my PC with these specs:

Micro: QuadCore Intel Core i7-860, 2933 MHz (22 x 133)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 (Bios updated to F11)
Ram: 2x4 (4GB ram)
PSU: XFX 650W Semi Modular 80 Cert Bronze

Here is the deal, when i connect the video card, the pc wont boot at all, there is no power at all in mobo (no lights or fans spinning) nothing... if i switch back to my old EVGA GTX460, PC boots perfect.

Something i tried was remove the GTX970 from the PCI port but leave the 6 pin and 6+2 pins connected to it, and problem remains... no power at all in mobo, but if i remove the power cables from card, PC boots fine.

Before contact EVGA for the warranty (which is a pain due to customs here in argentina) i want to check with users and see if someone had a similar issue...

im 90% sure that my 970 is defective (short circuit or damaged somehow during transportation to my country), but there is still a 10% of hope that maybe im doing something wrong?

any help will be appreciated, thanks!

lots of these newer card and older chipsets seem not to be compatible .. just to get started look up the z68 boards and these cards to get a idea ...

be sure you got your boards latest bios and hope it resolves ??

I do see where reinstalling the os may work some times like this guy claimed

Thank you for your fast reply!
Mobo is updated to latest BIOS version, F11, which is quite old actually (from 2011)... but taking into account that i've unplugged the GTX 970 from the PCI connector (leaving the power cables inserted into the card) and tried to turn on my pc and didnt worked, i mean no power at all in mobo or fans spinning... how is that possible related to motherboard incompatibility? its possible? if card was ok, shouldnt at least pc show some kind of power activity (like motherboard ligths?)

i sent the card to a store to be tested in high end gaming pc, waiting results for tomorrow...

well I guess my last post got removed some how ? one more time ...

'' i switch back to my old EVGA GTX460, PC boots perfect.'' so its down to try your card In a more up to date compatible motherboard - or your board just don't accept the card ?

theres always that chance you did get a bad card ?? so if you feel a quick rma and get another card and retry it out and see where it stands if you cant test it on another computer to see if its really the card at fault

with out any back up stuff to test with you really just don't know where the issue lies ...

well I been googling the heck out of this and don't see any reports of any issues or reports of it working fine ??

all I do know these newer cards and older boards can be ''funny''-

like I said , with out any means to do testing your just guessing and hoping for the best .. you need some one with a new more current build that these cards work on for sure and test yours out in it to insure it is or is not the card .. you may get another new 970 and find yourself fight back in the same boat your in now ???

Thank you for your replies guys... at this point i feel that are 2 possible things going on here

A) i got a defective card

B) my mother dont support card

as i said before, i leave the card in a store today to test in a more updated pc, so i had to wait until tomorrow to see if problem is on the card or its on my mobo.

If card is defective, i will have to send it back to usa, doing that from arg cost about 170 USD, which is insane, second issue is that customs here are a pain, specially with tech items, so i maybe had to spend another 100 usd there if amazon ship me a new card... so i hope that card works... fingers crossed until tomorrow!

will post any new as soon as possible.

thank you guys!

be sure you can see them testing the card out .. I would take the computer in to them and see if another brand or card [high end as the 970] will work in it as well ??? could be a bad psu holding things back when it got something fresh new and needs better power ??

i dont think my PSU is the issue, its a brand new XFX 650w, should be enough for 1 GTX 970 right? anyway i will ask them if they had a high end card to test on my pc too. thanks for that suggestion! :)

If you are not plugging the card (only the power cables) and the system doesn't work, there are 2 options:

1 your psu psdoesn't have enough power
2 your card have a problem with the power connectors making some kind of short-circuit making the psu unable to boot.

i think PSU works, because pc boots fine and runs perfectly with my old GTX 460 installed using the XFX 650W PSU.
what im not 100% sure is if PSU had enough power for the GTX970.

i will get an answer from the store that is testing my card today, so hopefully that will help me to identify the problem :)

graphic card is being tested today in another pc, so im hoping that helps me to identify the problem im having.

1. probably PSU dont have enough power, but i read that GTX 970 consume very low wattage, at least pc should boot with a 650W bronce cert PSU right?

2. card was shipped from usa to argentina via DHL and had to go trough customs (where they dont care much about packages) so there is a chance that card got damaged somehow in the transportation process... reading forums and browsing the web, i couldnt find any similar issue related to this card, which is weird.

Yep, the psu should be enough... What do you have plugged in besides the card?.

Maybe the psu is giving less power than it should...

In inclined towards the card actually...
The GTX 460 needs 140w iddle and up to 240 load. (According to benchmarks). Actually the 970 starts around 80w and max around 300...

just called the store, they tested the card in 2 computers, didnt worked in any of them.
they also used a tester to see if card was receiving power, they say that card receives power but not in all areas, to make a full test they will had to unmount it but that will avoid guarantee so i didnt want them to do that.

i guess i will send the card back to amazon and ask for a refound, then i will buy same card directly here in my country (card cost usd 700 here, and i already spent almost that amount with this faulty card :( ), its a shame.

thank you all for your help :)

between amazon and evga you should get satisfied - just the pain you got to go through to do so [fill out forms -box it up mail it in wait on them to decide on what there going to do and wait for the return ]

I cant say how evga works outside the U.S ?? but amazon has that A to Z guarantee ????

Thank you guys!
i already set up a return and refound via amazon, of course they wont refound shipping cost, but at least i got some of my money back :)
Unfortunately i ended up loosing about 250 usd on this already, and i will have to buy a card here in my country.. GTX970 are super expensive so im considering an overclocked version of the GTX 960, do you think that card will be enough to play NBA2k15 at full res ? that is the only game that really want to play :) my current gtx 460 run it, but very lagged.

thanks again for all your help :)

i think that amazon dont take costs when its international shipping (my case unfortunately).

i guess i will have to wait for their refound, and get a 960 instead :(

i meant that amazon will refound only price of card, shipping cost + custom taxes + shipping back to amazon, are non refoundable, at least that is what they said because its international shipping. :(
