Caution - Current Pending/Uncorrectable Sector Counting - Should I be worried?

So a while ago, my secondary storage hard drive failed to load/boot up along with my Windows 8.1 OS (using a Samsung SSD for the OS). It so far has happened like 3/50 times I've had to boot the computer up from shutdown. So I read the S.M.A.R.T. data using CrystalDiskInfo and I got the following results:

My problem is I am having a rough time interpolating and understanding the results myself. My question is should I be concerned that this drive is doomed to fail in the nearby future? I've taken precautions of backing up the important data on this drive. From what I am reading (http://www.z-a-recovery.com/manual/smart.aspx) since my Current and Worst values exceed the Threshold, it should be replaced as it is still under warranty?

All drives will fail in the future. You should always be concerned about losing your data and therefor always use good backup habits. A backup is a second, or more, copy of your important files at minimum.

The Pending sector count could be an issue or it just might mean you have other issues going on that are causing the drive to not read accurately all the time. For example a strong vibration , like a car pc hdd might receive, would cause read errors. Too many read errors on a sector would cause it to go pending. If it fails the retesting that 'pending sectors' will do then the system will try to move the data to a spare sector. If it is successful then your Reallocated Sector count will go up. If its not successful then your Unrecoverable Sector count will go up.

So these are the two other fields you need to watch; Reallocated Sectors and Unrecoverable Sectors.

I agree with I7baby, run WD's data lifegaurd and see what it comes up with. Perhaps you drive is still under warranty. :)

Hi there abc617,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with the drive. :(

It seems that the drive has some bad sectors related issues. I would also advise you to test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool(both short and extended tests) as the guys already suggested.
In case you get similar results, then I guess you can just contact WD's Support either by e-mail or phone and RMA the drive.

Sometimes the writing zeros approach helps when it comes to pending sectors. It will not hurt to try that(using the DLG tool) and retest the drive. Keep in mind that this is data destructive and you should back up all the data stored on the drive first.

WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Tuazjc
WD's Support: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=b5bCmX

Let me know how this goes,

I ran Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and the SMART Status and Test Result return "Pass" for results. Just CrystalDiskInfo reports problems with Current Pending Sector Count and Uncorrectable Sector Count. Is there a reason for a discrepancy between WD DLG saying there's not error and CrystalDiskInfo reporting those Sector Count issues?

As popatim suggested, the extended test should give a clearer picture. ;0
In case you can get all the data off the drive, write zeros on it(DLG tool) and retest it with both tools would be nice.
Anyway, it may be a good idea to contact WD's Support on that.

Cheers,
