hello

i've been trying for a while to boot to a recovery CD for a windows 8 laptop to no avail. the computer strarts up and then goes to a blue screen that tells me :

Your PC needs to be repaired

The operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or contains errors.

File: \\WINDOWS\system32\config\system

Error code : 0xc0000185

I changed the boot priority order to CD and disabled secure boot and when i restarted the PC i choose the boot option of SATA CD but nothing happens! :(

It goes back to the same blue screen.
I even tried using an external CD drive which also didn't work and apparently it doesn't support booting to a USB drive.

Tried booting from a widows 8 Iso CD which worked fine but the issues is i really need to back up all the documents before i do anything else.

The recovery CD itself works fine cause my windows 7 laptop was able to boot from the CD.

I hope this is enough information to help solve this, I really need all the help i can get cause i absolutely cannot lose the data on the drive :(

Take the hard disk out and slave it to your Windows 7 system. Go into x:\windows\system32\config (where x is the drive letter allocated) and rename the corrupted file System by adding .old to the name. Then rename the file System.bak by removing the .bak suffix.

With a bit of luck, it might fly straight when you return it to the Windows 8 system or at least, trigger the repair options, one of which will be Command Prompt.

Be not dismayed, most laptops have hatches on the underside, one of which will have an icon looking like three barrels and that indictaes the hard disk is beneath it.

If it is a daunting prospect, the alternative is to download a Linux operating system then burn it to a CD to run the laptop without impacting on the w8 system.

It gives you access to the hard disk so you could take it out to an external drive and you could also make the required changes above.

I've been able to access my datA! :D though i didn't take out the hard disk. Under the boot options after disabling secure boot, i set it to UEFI OS instead of UEFI and CMOS . The cds that i had previously tried worked just fine after that! Thanks again :)
